Glowing tradition

By Anita Stienstra

One of Springfield’s most beloved sites at Christmastime is the Dana-Thomas House State Historic Site on Luminaria Evening, set for Saturday, Dec. 22, from 4-8 p.m. Approximately 1,000 luminaria will shine along the sidewalks and ledges of the 12,600 square-foot structure. Tours are offered by the inviting light of decorated Christmas trees and warm, glowing fireplaces. Tours are silent except for live music performed in the house. Recently retired DTH Decorative Coordinator Kathy Liesman decorated the Dana-Thomas House halls for the holidays. This will be her last year. The home will remain decorated throughout the New Year, with tours Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site is closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency sponsors Luminaria Evening.
