Hipbone Sam Band

By Tom Irwin

About two years ago Kevin Hawkins decided to make a living playing music and that’s exactly what he’s done. Now known all over central Illinois as the fun lovin’, music makin’, get-a-party-goin’ Hipbone Sam, the guy who yells “Let me hear you say yeah!” played nearly 200 shows in 2010. By offering venues the choice of solo, duo, trio or full band setups, hosting weekly open jams of several varieties and mixing fun originals with familiar tunes, Hipbone carved a nice niche in the local scene. He uses a rotating who’s who of stellar area musicians, including Country Bruce Baise and Rick Mari (guitar), Bad Bill Robinson and Hawkeye Kane (harmonica), Kyle Kieszling (banjo), Harry Lounsberry (keyboards), Walt McLaren and Mark Riefler (bass) and Jim Bonefeste, Ed Williamson and Jeff Bechtel (drums) with all audience members considered part of the band as well. In 2009 he released a CD of original material, has a new one in the works for 2011 plus more of the same good stuff from Hipbone Sam and friends.

Hipbone is the greatest! Always a fun time.

Great article Tom!

Let's not forget Brian C Arnold! One ferverous bass player who's helping keep America safe in Iraq right now! We miss you buddy!

Brian Arnold could never be forgotten! Many musicians have played with Hipbone Sam, but only the players in the current rotation were listed in this article. Brian is deployed to Iraq for a year and is unable to perform with Hipbone at this time. We love Brian and look forward to his safe return home!
