GOING TO MARKET

By Cap City
Betty Rankin looks forward to the Old Capitol Farmers Market in Springfield every year. The Springfield resident was all smiles Wednesday, May 18, as she took a taste of her purchase from one of the new vendors on Adams Street, where Ashley Glatz and Patrick Knox sell fresh omelets, fruit and mint iced tea.

“This is quite the treat, they’re delicious,” says Rankin, as she bites into a chocolate-covered strawberry and makes her way through the market.

Vendors sell vegetables, organic meats, breads, pastries, fresh greens and fruit along Adams Street from Second Street to Fifth Street, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m to 1 p.m. through October.

“We’ve got a great showing for the first day,” says Ann Frescura, promotion and event director and marketing manager for Downtown Springfield, Inc., which sponsors the downtown farmers market.

Frescura says her favorite part of the market is seeing all the vendors and happy customers as she walks along the street. She expects several hundred people the first day of the market and an even better showing when the sun comes out.

Vendors accept payment from the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) and Women Infants and Children (WIC).

Always nice to see people returning to real food.  For as much as people want a good deal, they are also value passion.  You don't get that at chain stores.
