Dog gone good party

Pet owners and their four-legged friends, car enthusiasts and supporters of the Animal Protective League and Springfield Parks Foundation are in for a treat at Paws and Power, Sept. 9 at Southwind Park. Dog party (9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) participants receive a gift bag, frozen treat and paw painting. Canine contests (1:30 p.m., register 12:30-1:15 p.m.) to enter are: best dressed, best dance, most unusual dog trick, best smile, best bark, cutest, smallest and largest. There’s also Wiener dog races (12:30 p.m.), two-mile 9/11 commemorative walks (9:30-11 a.m. or 2:30-4 p.m. - $10); canine demos, dog baths ($6-$10), paw print stepping stones ($20), pet caricatures ($10), dog adoptions, micro-chipping ($30) and more. Other activities to enjoy are a juried vintage car show (1-5 p.m.) and noon parade; kite flying (10 a.m.-noon) with OurKitesFly soaring a 90-foot octopus kite and other specialty kites; kite giveaway to kids under age 12; petting zoo ($3); horse and carriage rides ($3); face painting ($1-$3) and more.
