JEREDEAN STYERS

June 6, 1954 – Sept. 7, 2012

What makes my grandmother special to me is the unconditional love she shared with me and our family. By this, she will never be forgotten.

My grandmother was a woman you could never get by with disrespecting. She stood for respect and honor to all who entered into her presence. She always expressed love to others, even when it hurt. It was her self-motivation, strong mind and will power that helped her to accomplish so much.

My grandmother attended college and became a fine young registered nurse. At one point in her new-found career she permanently damaged her back while lifting up on a patient for better comfort. This generous deed put an end to her treasured career as an RN. She endured a surgery that required doctors to implant a battery inside of her body. This battery shocked her nerves from her spine down through her left leg with the purpose of reducing pain. Doctors later diagnosed her with the well-known disease of Lupus. Another medical tragedy struck her life afterwards; within the year of 2012, our family was informed of my grandmother’s diagnosis of lung cancer. Her health continued to decline until her death on Sept. 7.

She never failed to reach out to others in the community, especially when her grandchildren were having trouble. Her constant engagement in the community helped her build unforgettable relationships that pour into our lives. Whether it is the faculty in the schools, or our family doctor, many can attest to the willing heart she possessed.

My grandmother once told me that life is so much more than it seems. Her life essentially taught me that it is not about how long you have to live, but what you do in the time apportioned to you.

– Jameelah Harrison, granddaughter
