GOOD DEEDS INDEED

In light of all the destruction and uncertainty that bombards us every day, it can be easy to overlook the good in humanity. But on Friday, about 250 volunteers will spread across the city to do good deeds, reminding us that we can be a blessing to others in the midst of chaos. It’s the 2013 Day of Action, organized by United Way of Central Illinois. The volunteers will paint, clean, landscape, sort, pack, move and whatever else is needed by 26 local nonprofit organizations like the Family Service Center and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Illinois. Volunteers will come from local companies like Horace Mann, Bunn-O-Matic, Hanson Professional Services and more, as well as from the City of Springfield, Southeast High School and other public institutions. The estimated value of the work that will be done comes to $22,000. This is the fourth year running that United Way has held a Day of Action in Springfield, and there’s a second event planned for early October.
