Treegate review ends

No criminal charges for cutting down relative's tree on city time

Sangamon County state's attorney says that he will not prosecute City Water, Light and Power workers who illicitly cut down a tree last year.

"This is a CWLP employee matter, not a matter for the criminal courts," said Sangamon County state's attorney John Milhiser.

Three employees were disciplined last year for falling the tree on the property of a brother of one of the workers while on city time using city equipment. The city fired Matt Winters, whose brother owned the land and who was accused of intimidating a neighbor who reported the incident to the city, but an arbitrator ordered him reinstated. Two other employees were suspended, but the arbitrator overruled one of the two suspensions.
