Akin to the sacred

Sunday, June 2, Fantastic Jones Family will perform a free gospel concert at Abundant Faith Christian Center, celebrating 40 years of making music. Siblings Robert L. Jones, Jr., Jerry E. Jones, Clifton O. Jones, Jackie L. Newman and Patricia A. Pittman will sing contemporary to traditional spirituals from the group’s earlier recordings and preview songs from their upcoming album to be released this fall.  Joining them on stage will be their 80-year-old mother, Dora Mae Jones, who will open the show with the first song she ever sang to her children. Dora Mae started the family singing group with her three older children at a Springfield church in 1973. Word of mouth spread about the family’s electrifying performances and invitations from around the country poured in. Besides five recordings and touring the U.S., the FJF has been featured several times on BET’s “Bobbie Jones Gospel Show.” In addition to making music, the family has tried throughout the years to help others. For that reason, concert-goers are asked to bring a nonperishable food item that FJF, in partnership with Express Employment Professionals, will give to Central Illinois Foodbank.
