Pharmacy Guest Artist: Heather Brammeier

This is the fourth in a series of posts leading up to this evening's (Saturday, March 9) group exhibit of work by members of local art collective The Pharmacy.

Installation Sketch 1 by Heather Brammeier

It's basically a painting in space, says Heather Brammeier of the installation work she plans to show at tonight's Pharmacy gallery opening. I compose it the same way I would compose a painting, and when you see it, your brain basically flattens it into an image.  In her work as a painter, she explains, the imagery she uses is abstract and biomorphic, based on natural forms. What the paintings in space allow me to do is take materials that are a little bit unexpected for a fine art piece and make them into an image. Accordingly, some objects have been created especially for the installation, while others, such as an actual rug from Brammeier's living room, are just things she happened to have around the house.

Brammeier is Associate Professor of Painting at Bradley University and a member of Peoria's Backspace Collective,  a group with goals and orientation similar to The Pharmacy.  She was invited to take part in tonight's event by Pharmacy advisor Allison Lacher (also the Visual Arts Gallery Manager and Adjunct Assistant Professor at UIS), who recently presented a solo showing of her own work at Backspace. I went to the last Pharmacy exhibition and was really impressed with the quality of the artists and the large crowd that showed up, says Brammeier. I am really happy that they invited me to take part in what they're doing in Springfield. I think it's really great for the community to realize that there is so much art that's going on and it doesn't have to come from Chicago or New York - there are artists all over our state and the country.

Heather Brammeir's work appears as part of The Pharmacy's 5th group exhibit at 1022 S.Pasfield, tonight, Saturday, March 9 from 6PM-9PM.
