Music tonight: Gentle vs. Brutal

Springfield music fans bemoaning a lack of variety in local concert offerings can go ahead and bite their tongues on this particular evening as a former Bon Iver collaborator and a balls-out thrash metal show each prepare to take downtown stages.

Field Report

The Hoogland Center for the Arts, via Bedrock 66, is playing host to Field Report, a delicate, melodic, folk-based group which has garnered reams of critical praise and comparisons to Paul Simon and Nebraska-era Bruce Springsteen. Check their music out here:

Meanwhile, a few blocks away:

Clenched Fist

Clenched Fist pays tribute to one of the most notorious and / or beloved thrash metal bands in the history of the genre, Brazil's Sepultura. The Fist's Tin Can Pub gig tonight will also feature sets from Springfield's What Thou Will (self-described as a malicious onslaught of diabolical debauchery & brutal blasphemy!!!!!), Central Illinois death metalers Skywalker and the oddly spelt Tradition ov Torture, who vow to take metal back from the weak and the fake. Here's a taste of Clenched Fist:

Music fans, the choice is yours.

Field Report performs at HCFTA, 420 S. 6th ST, at 8 PM, purchase tickets here or at the box office; Clenched Fist et al will be at the Tin Can Pub, 225 E. Monroe, also at 8 PM, five bucks at the door.
