Here's the scoop, I mean scope

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s literary arts magazine, Scope, just made its way into my hands. Contributors recently read at the Vachel Lindsay State Historic Site, SIU and Charlie’s Club at Andiamo’s. Perhaps you were able to hear them and received a copy of the chapbook. Here’s an image of the cover.

At first glance my thoughts were “oh, dear” but quickly turned to “wow” when I opened the book. Don’t let the drab cover fool you (not that the acrylic painting isn’t emotive and interesting). Inside is alight with colorful and visually pleasing art. Like this:

Here’s more art:

The book contains poetry, prose and art. A first, second and third place winner was selected from each genre. Michael Pranzatelli, M.D. won first place in the poetry category for his piece, “Catching Up on Zs.” Pranzatelli is quite the poet and artist. One of his paintings is above and I wrote about another in Scope a few years ago. You can view his poem and this entire edition (and past editions) at SIU’s website. Here's two articles I wrote on past issues (including comments on Pranzatelli -- "Tearing away the medical mask" and "Medicine meets literature." Submissions for the 2014 edition will be accepted from October to December 2013.
