Friday at Donnie's: Springfield Renaissance

This Friday July 5th marks the first of several events under the Springfield Renaissance umbrella. Presented by the not-for-profit Illinois Independent Arts Association, the shows have been created with an eye toward "supporting the young music community through arts and entertainment," according to IIAA board member Eric Heyen, who hopes that this will be the first of many monthly shows.

Heyen goes on to describe the main event as "a friendly competition among fellow local musicians using our online voting system" wherein audience members can vote for their favorite performers in various categories using their smartphones.

Friday's show goes from 8pm to 12am at Donnie's Homespun in the Vinegar Hill Mall. Artist with work on display include Rachel Jennings, Kyle Kirkpatrick and Lu Le, while bands set to perform are Lowder & Gorman's Infinitenergy, Solar Chariot, Of Sound Mind, As Thick As Thieves and The Old Fashioneds. Each band will play a 20 minute set. Also on the bill, Special Ops Underground Comedy will present stand-up sets from Shane Torres and Friends. Admission is $5.00, proceeds to benefit district 186 music programs.
