Here comes the neighborhood

Back in 2011 I chastised Springfield officials for the city's failure to take steps necessary to slow the rot that has been spreading through east side housing for years. Having damned officials then, it is only fair that I praise them now.

The manager of the city’s building department recently announced that 63 dilapidated buildings have been torn down since last winter, compared to the 13 there were leveled in all of 2011. According to a SJ-R report, the change owes to several factors -– the county surrendering to the city delinquent tax parcels, the retraining of city street crews to do demo work, more lawyers working on code enforcement, an ambitious non-profit housing developer, a go-getting new public works director.

Like they say, it takes a city to save a city.
