DEMO Project Gallery hosts contemporary sculpture opening Friday

There certainly seems to be noDEMO Project, a new artist-run gallery emphasizing current and experimental trends in art, will debut with Betsy Odom: Bulldog, an exhibition of contemporary sculpture. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place on Friday, September 13, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Betsy Odom is a Chicago-based sculptor. She earned her MFA from Yale University and currently teaches at Columbia College Chicago. She offers three-dimensional objects intentionally born from a variety of materials, among them tooled leather, sporty fabrics, chunky silver, automotive finishes, and airbrushed paints. A variety of media and technique are employed as well, from leather tooling to woodworking, ceramics to airbrushing, mold making to woodturning, sewing to metalworking. Careful attention to materials and technique are pronounced in her works, which themselves probe, and even challenge, concepts surrounding displays of identity. Her works appears to dance a line between an overt challenge of stereotypes and a playful, humorous critique of subculture trends. “Seen in the right context, these materials become signifiers of the cultural phenomena that have surrounded my own development:  Southern culture, women’s athletics, queer lifestyles, car enthusiasts, hobbyists, fantasy, or camp,” says Betsy. “The aesthetics of these groups, although rooted in functionality, often serve to reinforce embedded messages about gender, class, race, and sexuality.” Betsy combines craftsmanship and humor to extract and subvert these messages, creating objects that entertain the possibility, the fantasy, of moving freely among social groups and confronting the contradictions therein.  Besty Odom: Bulldog will debut DEMO Project, located on the campus of the Springfield Art Association (SAA) and directed by Springfield-based contemporary artists, all of whom have an affiliation to the UIS Visual Arts program. The reception will take place Friday, September 13 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. DEMO Project is located on the SAA campus at 732 N 4th Street, Springfield, IL 62702.
