The legendary musical Gypsy, considered by many to be the best American musical ever written, will be presented Aug. 23-25 and Aug. 30-Sept. 1 at Hoogland Center for the Arts. Based on memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the show tells the backstage tale of vaudeville entertainer-turned-stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and her domineering mother Rose. Rose battles agents, theater owners and stage managers in her efforts to push her two daughters toward stardom during the dying days of vaudeville. Gypsy contains many songs that became popular standards, including “Small World,” “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “Together” and “Let Me Entertain You.” Featuring a full orchestra and a cast of talented local performers including Mary Kate Smith as Madame Rose and Devin Dinora as Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical is directed by Gus Gordon.
