Between The Cracks: Ernest T & The Rock Throwers Tonight!

Once again, Faingold at Large proudly presents "Between the Cracks" - the recurring feature designed to shine a light onto Springfield-area bands, and all in their own words, to boot. Join us, won't you? There's gold between them thar cracks!

Today's BTC spotlight lands on local rock and rollers Ernest T and the Rock Throwers who will be performing this very evening at Harry's Adult DayCare (320 W. Highland Ave. in Springfield).

Personnel: Joe Thurman - Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar, Harmonica; Kevin Smith - Lead Guitar & Vocals; Paul Dow - Bass; Lonnie Wooden - Drums

Native or transplant? Joe is from Missouri, moving to Springfield after stops in Wisconsin and Texas. Kevin is “Pekinese,” living in Pekin. Paul and Lonnie are long-time Springfield musicians.

What's in a name, particularly yours? We had a gig coming up, and no name. After several shots of some very potent Haitian rum, while reminiscing about the Andy Griffith show, we chose to honor the memory of the character “Ernest T Bass.” For those that might not know, Ernest T was fond of throwing rocks to get people’s attention.

When did you form? We started as a power trio about four years ago. Shocked to learn that you can meet normal people on Craig’s List, we added Joe to play keyboards and rhythm guitar. Tired of being told he “kind of looks like Jack Black,” original guitar player Rick Dixon decided to retire. Defying all odds, we met a second (fairly) normal person on Craig’s List, adding Kevin Smith to play lead guitar. Kevin juggles his Ernest T duties with the Peoria based bands “Gypsy Road” and the “Brian Dennison Band.”

Releases: Hopefully soon, with time off for good behavior.

How do you pay the bills? Joe is in the aircraft business and loves the smell of jet fuel in the morning; Kevin makes signs somewhere in Peoria; Lonnie owns and operates “The Mane Station,” where he has been coiffing much of Springfield for over 25 years; Paul works for the AIEC, traveling the globe documenting stories of rural electrification.

What other artists have had the biggest impact on you? Joe - Gregg Rolie, Lee Michaels, The Beatles; Kevin - Edwin McCain, Kenny Wayne Shepherd; Lonnie - James Taylor, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles; Paul - Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Stones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Finish this sentence:  If we didn't have to worry about money we... would be playing a lot of music on beaches…really nice beaches.

Upcoming live appearances: October 11th at Harry’s Adult Daycare, 8:30-12:30; October 18th at Crows Mill Pub, 8:30-12:30; November 1st at Kuhl Tyme Korner (Jacksonville) 9-1
