Studebaker John

Young John Grimaldi was born and raised in an Italian-American neighborhood in Chicago. His first taste of music came in the form of a harmonica at age 7. Soon he visited the famed Maxwell Street area, home to Chicago blues and became a lifelong disciple of the blues. After seeing a particularly exciting and exhilarating Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers show, John devoted his life to playing slide blues guitar. Since then, he’s continued on an upward path playing old school rockin’ blues on voice, guitar and harmonica with his top-notch band the Hawks often behind him. From Straight No Chaser, his first record release in 1978, to a memorable stint on Blind Pig Records in the 90s on through his Avanti Records work and his recent Delmark releases, Studebaker John’s recorded output is immense, intense and sincerely meant as an extension of all the blues before. He still resides in Chicago while playing his vibrant blues music across the U.S., U.K. and continental Europe on a regular basis.
