Springfield Ballet Company presents its 39th annual Nutcracker at Sangamon Auditorium, UIS, Dec. 14 and 15. Set to Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score, the dance follows Clara and her Nutcracker from a lavish Christmas party to a fierce battle with the evil Mouse King, then to a magical journey through the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets. “Our production of The Nutcracker has become more beautiful and enchanting every year.” said SBC Artistic Director Julie Ratz. Featuring a cast of 130, SBC’s Alana Aragon will dance the role of Clara, with Carolina Ballet Theatre guest danseur Peter Base as her Nutcracker Prince. Other guest dancers from CBT are Erica Wessleman (former SBC dancer) as the delicate Sugar Plum Fairy; and Samuel Chester and Martin Justo. Chicago-based dancer Todd Kiech will perform Arabian Coffee, and SBC dancers Bailee Brinkman and Tiffany Riech take the roles of Snow Queen and Dew Drop, respectively. Also of note, guest artist Artem Burnukin, performing in the Russian Trepak. Burnukin is a Ukrainian National Champion in men’s gymnastics and Cirque Du Soleil performer for the last five years.
