Editor's Note 3/6/14

Comes news this week of the passing of Florence “Flossie” Hardin, in Santa Barbara, Calif., at age 102½. A longtime Springfield resident and spouse of prominent attorney John Hardin, Florence at retirement age came to work at the fledgling Illinois Times in 1976 as our founding bookkeeper and voice of sanity. She pioneered the slogan we still use, “We don’t pay much but we pay on time.” We helped keep her sane, too, as she cared for her husband with dementia; she enjoyed working among young creative people with a cause. Florence became our archivist, clipping and sorting each week’s paper by subject and author into files we still find easier to use than today’s digital archives. At 83 she moved to California to be closer to her daughter, Becky, but kept in touch by email. She hadn’t planned to live a long life but at age 100 she decided she might as well keep going so hired a personal trainer to keep her in shape. There’s more about her at www.wrhsb.com. Florence, we’re proud to have known you. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
