Springfield Municipal Opera will open its 2014 season with the musical The Sound of Music Friday, June 13. The production will run Fridays and Saturdays for three weekends with Thursday shows on June 19 and June 26. The true story of the von Trapp family follows the life of Maria Rainer, a young postulant at an abbey in 1930s Austria, who becomes the governess of Captain von Trapp’s seven children just as Nazi Germany comes into power in Austria. This was the final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein and includes the popular songs “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song. Directed by Greg Donathan, Mary Harmon plays Maria and John O’Connor is Captain von Trapp. Reserved seating tickets can be purchased in advance at themuni.org or at the Sangamon Auditorium box office in person or by phone. Tickets are also available at The Muni’s box office 90 minutes prior to curtain time.
