Need info on how to avoid getting sucked into war?
Bill Ruhaak, a veteran of the Illinois Army Reserve, offers advice at an event on Wednesday sponsored by Pax Christi Springfield, a local Roman Catholic peace group.
Ruhaak, a reservist from 1964-70, is a 1995 graduate of the Diocese of Joliet Peace and Justice Institute. Active in many Roman Catholic peace and social-justice efforts, he's also a member of the War Resisters League, the Peace Tax Fund, Prisoner Visitation and Support, the West Suburban Faith-Based Peace Coalition, and the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions.
Ruhaak's talk, titled "The Power of Conscientious Objection," will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Lincoln Library, Seventh Street and Capitol Avenue.
Springfield's Planned Parenthood hands out free condoms, safer-sex info, and candy to any and all tricksters who stop by the agency's offices between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 28 and 29.
Planned Parenthood is located at 1000 E. Washington St.

A familiar voice from the Statehouse, Illinois Radio Network Springfield bureau chief Ben Kiningham, was named the radio-television alumnus of the year at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
Kiningham's career started at SIUC in 1960, when he was a continuity director for the campus FM station. The recipient of numerous journalism awards, Kiningham is a retired lieutenant colonel in the Illinois Air National Guard.
