The gift that keeps on giving

Ex-anchorman’s wardrobe goes for peanuts

We here at Illinois Times are neither rich nor proud, which is why we shop for bargains at local thrift stores.

So it was that we stopped by the Goodwill on Dirksen Parkway today during the lunch hour. It was the typical assortment of used shirts and pants and shoes and what-not from Joseph A. Bank, Target and sundry nothing-to-write-home-about stores.

Then we got to the suits-and-sport-coats aisle.

Our eye was immediately drawn to a gray pinstripe suit that screamed quality. Sure enough, it was a Golden Fleece suit from Brooks Brothers. Top of the line. New ones sell for more than $2,000. This one was marked $11.99. And what’s this next to it? A upper tier Canali suit from Italy, tailored from Super 120s wool fabric, the really expensive kind. The jacket was marked $5.99, the trousers were $4.99.

It went on and on. Armani. Another Canali. Another Armani. And then the piece d’resistance, a charcoal suit from Samuelsohn, a high-end Canadian maker. Custom made, with plenty of hand work and pick stitching. Gorgeous charcoal fabric. And the original owner’s name embroidered in beautiful red cursive script on the inside: Vince DeMentri. A closer inspection turned up business cards left in pockets from stations in New York and Philadelphia, where DeMentri worked before landing in Springfield.

You can say a lot about the erstwhile Channel 20 anchorman, and plenty of people have, but he sure knew how to dress. Check it out in the slideshow below.

DeMentri’s last night on the air came on the night of the February primary election. Hours after the polls closed, he was involved in a physical altercation at Hooters with a fellow employee and never returned to Channel 20. Read about Dementri's history with Channel 20 here.
