Editor's note 7/14/16

Two days after the police killings in Dallas, as the nation struggled once again to respond to racial violence, the annual business meeting of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia in Austin was about to conclude when a member brought up the need to continue working on the organization’s lack of diversity. A quick look around showed there were no people of color in the room, which seemed puzzling to the left-leaning publishers who have such good intentions. There had been attempts to deal with the problem over the years, someone explained, but the diversity committee had been inactive lately. The group resolved to try again. Likely a similar scene is playing out in institutions around the country, where people of goodwill don’t know what to do. Kenley Wade, chair of the Springfield Coalition on Dismantling Racism, offers this: “We could start with recognizing that racism is our enemy, not each other.” Grappling with the amorphous hand of systemic, institutional racism takes more than noble intent. It takes study, understanding and enormous resolve. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
