Editor’s note 7/21/16

Those of us watching the Republican National Convention to see whether Donald Trump can appeal beyond his base have been disappointed by all the attention to his family. Whether Melania’s speech was plagiarized is of no importance compared to the candidate’s stance on trade, immigration and foreign policy. That Sen. Mark Kirk and Gov. Bruce Rauner are convention no-shows signals they think Trump has little chance to carry Illinois, so maybe the rest of us need not concern ourselves with where Trump stands on the issues. Besides, what he says may not be what he does. “Whatever he says campaigning has no bearing on what he might do if he’s governing,” says the libertarian Cato Institute. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
