music notes 2-3-05

¥ What’s this — Springfield is discovering Mardi Gras? Well, sort of. Bars along the Fifth Street Strip have banded loosely with the distributor of the world’s top-selling beer to give us “Pardi Gras” the night of Saturday, Feb. 5. That’s all the information you get.

¥ Remember that Oteil and the Peacemakers are in Theatre 3 at the Hoogland Center for the Arts (420 S. Sixth St., 217-523-2787) at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3. Oteil, who leads the jazz/funk/groove jam band, is also the current bass player for the Allman Brothers Band. The show is brought to you by the good folks at Head West Sub Stop, leaders in delicious sandwiches and hip music bookings.

¥ Everyone please say hello to the newest member of the esteemed open-mic club: Oakie. Yes, Mr. Morris of Ultraviolet fame is hosting a free-for-all at Frankie’s (2765 S. Sixth St. in the Jewel-Osco Plaza, 217-523-0308) every Wednesday, starting around 8 p.m. Each week he’ll feature a special guest, and you guessed it — this is one hard-rockin’ open stage.

¥ Here’s something you don’t think of when you think about Texas music: a traditional jazz trio from Austin. Yet here they are, the Tucker Rountree Sound, playing Robbie’s (4 Old State Capitol Plaza, 217-528-1901) 5: 30-7:30 p.m. and Jazz Central Station (700 E. Adams St., 217-789-1530) 9 p.m.-midnight on Friday, Feb. 4. Somehow they’ve made it through the Lone Star country-music maze and survived to achieve renown as a respected jazz combo. Well, I’ll be.

¥ Seems we have some lost souls in our midst. The John Wilde Group, a band from Liverpool, England, crossed the pond to hang out in Nashville, Tenn. They recently came to Springfield to appear on Bob Bartel’s Access 4 TV program (6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, on Insight Cable’s Channel 4). In addition to performing originals, the group covers acts that include Cream, Led Zeppelin, and Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher. They’re stuck in Springfield for a while, picking up gigs at local bars. Do them — and yourself — a favor and go for a listen on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Knuckleheads (2000 Peoria Rd., 217-789-1488). And no jokes about the accents — they’re feeling a bit homesick right now and need all the loving they can get.
