LEGENDS AND FAIRY TALES
Historic sites in Springfield are gearing up for the holidays with events both somber and joyous. On Saturday at 1 p.m., veterans, friends and families will gather at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Oak Ridge Cemetery for the annual Christmas Remembrance at which the names of service members who remain missing in action or who were taken as prisoners of war will be read. A barbershop chorus will provide the music, and a tree will be decorated with ornaments bearing the names of deceased loved ones – anyone who’s thankful for veterans is welcome to bring ornaments that will withstand inclement weather. One week later, on Dec. 10, children of all ages are invited to attend story hours at the Executive Mansion (beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.), the Vachel Lindsay Home (starting at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.), the Old State Capitol (12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.) and the Dana-Thomas House (starting 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.). Way more fun, we think, than spending a day binge-watching stuff on Netflix.
