Editor's note 2/2/17

The Affordable Care Act has been responsible for improving the health of thousands of low-income central Illinois residents who, with the benefit of insurance, now are under the care of doctors and hospitals. Springfield’s medical facilities and physicians also benefit from being paid for their services through insurance, rather than having to provide charity care or no care at all. As described in the op-ed on this page by Dr. Stephen Soltys, this system that provides great benefit to Sangamon County and Illinois is under dire threat from the Trump administration. Our Republican congressmen, Rodney Davis and Darin LaHood, enjoyed the snarky sound of their slogan “Repeal Obamacare” when it seemed a distant possibility. Now they need to grow up and represent their constituents, who stand to be greatly harmed if the insurance system is dismantled.  –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
