Editors Note 3/9/17

It is now looking increasingly unlikely that Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly will come up with a budget for the upcoming fiscal year. After Gov. Bruce Rauner withdrew his support from Senate negotiations on a “grand bargain,” the governor has called on Democrats to propose more spending cuts, after proposing none of his own. As the stalemate continues – to the detriment of state social services, universities, doctors and hospitals and state employees – the new comptroller, Susana Mendoza, has been mixing things up politically by calling out the governor for failing to take responsibility. “The third year of his administration has the makings of a complete financial meltdown,” she said this week. “His failure in leadership has been so spectacular that no aspect of the state has been spared.” –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
