Stop the presses!
Central Illinois theater lovers are in for a treat this July, as Springfield’s Legacy Theatre has been selected as one of 12 regional theater groups across the United States to receive licensing rights for Disney’s hit Broadway musical titled Newsies: The Musical. The show, based on the real-life newsboy strike of summer 1899, follows charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly and his band of newspaper carries in their fight against publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, who raised newspaper prices at the expense of carriers. Newsies was first presented onscreen in 1992 as a live action musical and quickly captured the hearts of millions. On March 20, 2012, the Broadway production of Newsies opened at New York City’s Nederlander Theatre and went on to break seven house attendance records during a 1,005-show run. In 2016, two years after a two-year national Broadway tour, Disney announced plans to license the show to 12 regional theaters for the 2017 season. Scott Richardson, director of The Legacy Theatre, says, “Imagine our surprise when we received a response … telling us that Disney had granted us the license to produce the show. … I believe there are only one or two productions in the country opening before us.” For more information about Newsies: The Musical, visit http://atthelegacy.com or call 800-838-3006.
