LANDMARK CEMETERY

The Sangamon County Historic Preservation Commission (SCHPC) has named Churchill Cemetery – currently owned by Clear Lake Township – an official county landmark. The small cemetery, previously known as Bissell Cemetery and the German Prairie Cemetery, is located off Route 54 on Colt Road. The land was originally donated in the early 1800s by the Churchill family and “Churchill” is also the most prevalent name found on the labeled graves. The earliest burial with an existing stone is 1848. “Genealogy is a tourism driver, and cemeteries like Churchill represent an opportunity to capture those dollars in our county,” said SCHPC chair Chuck Pell.
