Editor's note 4/26/18

Speaking in Springfield Saturday at the annual Illinois Innocence Project dinner will be attorney Jerry Buting, of the 2015 Netflix documentary “Making a Murderer” and author of Illusion of Justice, who speaks to the workings of an often flawed justice system, as seen from his view as co-counsel in the sensational Steven Avery. Meanwhile Avery, Buting’s former client, whiles away the years in a Wisconsin prison after he was convicted for the murder of Teresa Halbach, as seen on TV. He’s hired a new attorney to handle his appeals, hoping for a new trial. Avery’s codefendant, Brian Dassey, had his conviction overturned in 2016, but he still hasn’t been released from prison. The recent developments have provided Netflix with enough material to produce a season two of “Making a Murderer,” though no premiere date has been announced. News of the new season would be more exciting to TV series fans if the case weren’t so sad, frustrating and real. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and CEO
