GREEN HOTEL

We’ve heard folks say that green is the new black, but we didn’t realize the adage was going to take Springfield by storm.

We celebrated the capital city’s first certified green building (the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency headquarters) in January and expect to see the second when Erin’s Pavilion at Southwind Park opens this summer. Now we’re giving kudos to Springfield’s first certified green hotel, the Candlewood Suites at 2501 Sunrise Dr.

The extended-stay hotel exhibits several energy efficient features, including motion sensors that turn lights and heating/cooling units on and off and a water drainage system that feeds outdoor landscaping. Guests can also recycle aluminum cans, plastic bottles, paper and newspapers at their convenience, or the materials will be collected and recycled for them once they check out of the hotel.

Candlewood Suites opened on March 3.
