SISTER HELPING SISTER

Three sweaty men smiled widely as they loaded a shipment of crutches into the back of a hot semi truck Tuesday afternoon, wedging the wooden and metal braces individually between hospital beds that stood upright to save space.

The crutches and beds are headed to San Pedro, Mexico, one of Springfield’s two sister cities, as part of a medical supply shipment collected by Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach, a Springfield-based charity that sends used and donated medical equipment to nations in need.

Mission Outreach founder and president Bruce Compton said the eight-ton, $127,000 shipment of supplies like wheelchairs, bandages and surgical equipment will be distributed to a hospital in San Pedro, as well as a food bank and other facilities there.

The project was prompted by a 2006 visit to San Pedro by members of the Springfield Sister Cities Association.

In the past year, Mission Outreach has shipped more than $6 million in supplies to 50 countries, Compton said.
