After sitting empty for eight years, the former On Broadway bar needed some serious cleaning, says Melody Hawn, the Springfield native who is reopening the bar with a new name and a well-versed partner. She and Al Travis, a Springfield transplant from Chicago, opened the new Broadway Nites bar at 210 Broadway St. on Oct. 30, after months of cleanup, repairs and updates.

Business has been booming ever since, Hawn says, adding that people lined up outside the door before the bar even opened for the first time.

“I consider myself lucky to have this opportunity,” she says. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do myself.”

Broadway Nites is like two bars in one, Hawn says, with a pub on the lower level and a laser-lit club upstairs featuring karaoke, live music and DJs throughout the week.

Hawn also hopes to get a local restaurateur into the bar’s kitchen to serve lunch and dinner in the near future.

“If you’re in your 30s, you’re already familiar with what this place used to be,” Hawn says. “It was the largest club when it was open, and it was always a party here. We want to bring that back.”
