REVISITING THE RHOADS

Newlyweds Dyke and Karen Rhoads were stabbed to death on July 6, 1986, as they slept in their Paris, Ill., home.

Police had no leads for months, until two individuals — both admitted alcoholics who had seven DUI convictions between them — stepped forward to finger locals Randy Steidl and Herbert Whitlock for the murders. These testimonies led to the conviction of both men in 1987; Steidl received a death sentence. After nearly two decades in prison, they were released due to lack of evidence [see Dusty Rhodes, “Badge of Honor, Aug. 25, 2005].

The Rhoads’ case, which is still unsolved, will be featured Sunday, Jan. 10, on “On the Case with Paula Zahn.” The episode airs at 10 p.m. on Investigation Discovery (not Discovery Channel). Several people involved in the case are interviewed, including Steidl, local private investigator Bill Clutter, former Illinois State Police Lt. Michale Callahan and several of the Rhoads’ family and friends.
