Joel Styzens

Two friends with different styles but similar tastes come together to host an all-acoustic night at the Ghost Light Open Mic instigated by local raconteur, impresario and musician Ted Keylon. In 2009 Chicago resident and former Springfieldian Joel Styzens released the award-winning acoustic guitar album, Relax Your Ears. For Styzens, a former studied jazz percussionist who turned to composing guitar instrumentals after developing extreme aural sensitivity that affected his drumming, the title carries a strong meaning. Heather Styka, an up and coming Chicago-based singer-songwriter, released the independently produced Travels and Teacups last year to critical success. The record reflects Styka’s minimal approach to arranging music while carrying distinct poetic imagery in her lyrical voice.  Keylon interviews Styzens Tues., April 13, at 10 p.m. on WQNA 88.3 FM during the Esoterica program and intends to feature both CDs prominently during the radio show.
