Here’s a riddle: What is red and always in high demand?  The answer could be a lot of things, but the most important answer is blood. The American Red Cross estimates that only 3 out of every 100 Americans give blood, yet more than 38,000 pints of blood are used to save lives every day. There is no artificial substitute for human blood, so donors are always needed.

That’s why the Central Illinois Community Blood Center and the Springfield-based University of Spa & Cosmetology Arts will be hosting a blood drive together. Potential donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old, or age 16 with a signed parental consent form. To donate, you just have to answer a few screening questions and get a quick, confidential evaluation of your responses and vital signs.

Here’s another riddle: How can you get a professional haircut without paying a dime? Donate blood at the blood drive, and USCA will cut your hair for free.  The event is from noon to 4 p.m., July 21 at 2913 W. White Oaks Drive in Springfield. To schedule an appointment, call 753-8551.
