cats in chelsea
cat #i

well sam your white whiskers
they are a national treasure
how remarkably they express
that velvet black face you claim your own
it is the face only a senator of cats
would carry in the halls of deliberation

oh you know when to institute
progress through the legislature
or when to hiss the clumsy ploys
those mastodons foist on your republic

old buddy we have years in common
we have both expended more lives than most
and have yet to count through nine
and only this morning
you challenged your arthritic bones
and lapped from the toilet bowl
what a triumph that was for your old legs

you only pretend you need
a footstool to leap up on the bed
how well you understand
w h audens human condition
how your mistress and your master
will rush to serve you
when you offer a simple meow

I will not go on
you do not need my praises
I will say only that you can double
the very image of yourself
when the kitchen overhead light
gleams to touch your shadow
