SANGAMON SCHOLARS

Education is expensive, and it’s getting more so. The College Board estimates that tuition costs nationwide increased an average 9.3 percent beyond inflation in 2009-2010. Put simply, the cost of going to college requires more dollars even as those dollars lose their purchasing power. That makes scholarships like those administered by the Sangamon County Community Foundation all the more valuable.

SCCF recently announced 19 scholarships available for college-bound students in Sangamon County, totaling more than $32,000 dollars. There are scholarships available specifically for African-American and Latino students, for women or students in specific fields like construction or nursing, and even a scholarship for descendents of World War II veterans.

Applications are due March 1, 2011. Interested students can apply online at http://sccf.us/2011_scholarshipinfo.html. For more information, call 217-789-4431 or email scholarships@sccf.us.
