African-American annals

Throughout the month of February many events are planned to celebrate Black History Month throughout central Illinois. Feb. 7-10, check out The Human Race Machine at Lincoln land Community College from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The computer console allows participants to see themselves with the facial characteristics of six different races mapped onto their own visage. Feb. 23 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the University of Illinois Springfield Brookens Auditorium, view the 2004 film, Something the Lord Made about John Hopkins’ first African-American surgeon - starring Alan Rickman, Mos Def, Kyra Sedgwick and Gabriella Union. Listen to History Professor Charles Russell Branham who presents Race, Freedom & Equality: From Lincoln to Present Day, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum Union Theater. Other events are planned at LLCC, UIS, ALPM, Sherman and Chatham libraries, Illinois State Library and SIU School of Medicine.
