Cultural cavalcade

On one of the most popular weekends in the capital city of Springfield, the Old State Capitol lawn and adjoining streets and sidewalks transform into an outdoor art gallery. With more than 150 exhibitors from around the country, including 30 new ones, you can view and buy anything and everything handmade from jewelry to lawn ornaments. The food and entertainment lineup are as colorful and plentiful. Pictured above is a digital photograph titled,"Swim," by Alyssa Currie, a senior at Williamsville High School. The artwork was selected as the 2011 SOCAF grand prize winner in the fair's annual art competition for Sangamon county students, grades 5-12. This and other winning entries can be seen in the Old Capitol Rotunda during the Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair. Also, the Art of Illinois Wine Festival runs Saturday and Sunday at Fifth and Jefferson streets. As one of the missions of the Old Capitol Art Fair, founders hoped to build Springfield’s civic art collection, and today more than 200 pieces are on exhibit at various locations around town.
