SHARE A MEAL

Maldaner's is one of seven restaurants that will participate in the state's first Share-A-Meal event, sponsored by Community Shares of Illinois, a non-profit that represents more than 70 charities.

Starting on Monday, March 8, through March 13, Maldaner's will donate 30 percent of its lunch and dinner proceeds to Community Shares. Diners also have the option of directing part of their contribution to one of several local non-profits participating in the event. They are: Planned Parenthood, Habitat for Humanity, PORA, the Heartland Peace Center, The Springfield Project, Illinois NOW, Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities in Illinois, Prevention First, Illinois Stewardship Alliance, and Lincoln Memorial Garden.

Maldaner's is located at 222 S. Sixth St.

BROWN DECISION COMMEMORATED

A group working to recruit minority teachers for the Springfield and Decatur school systems plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling at an event on Sunday at UIS.

Project Minority Student Support for Teaching will present a skit, written by project director Loretta Meeks, based on the events leading up to Brown. The U.S. Supreme Court decision, issued on May 17, 1954, barred school segregation based on race. A panel discussion of attorneys representing the Black Attorneys' Organization follows the skit.

The free event will be held from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in Brookens Auditorium in the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus.

GREENS COUGH UP THE GREEN

Local environmentalists host a fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Barak Obama on Friday, March 5.

One of the leading Democrats in the race, Obama is among six members of the Illinois State Senate who last year garnered a 100 percent environmental voting record from the Illinois Environmental Council.

The fundraiser, which will be held from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at Stella Blue at 221 S. Fifth St., is hosted by Springfield Friends of the Environment. Donations are $25.
