PURCHASING POWER

Two opportunities for charitable giving in Springfield are giving new meaning to the phrase “put your money where your mouth is.” Through July 2, Shop ’N Save grocery stores in Springfield offer shoppers a chance to combat child hunger by purchasing a full bag of groceries for the Central Illinois Foodbank at a cost of only $5. About 16 percent of Illinois children don’t get enough to eat, according to hunger relief charity Feeding America, so Shop ’N Save’s “Feed Our Future” program hopes to collect 6,000 bags of food to help out. For more information, visit www.shopnsave.com or call 314-984-0900.

Meanwhile, three restaurants in Springfield have partnered with West Side Christian Church to support an “extreme school makeover” at Harvard Park Elementary School. During June and July, Chili’s, Kiku Japanese Steak & Seafood House and Twist-n-Swirlz will donate 10 percent of pre-tax proceeds to the makeover project any time a patron presents a special voucher. It’s an almost effortless way to give back to the community. For more information or to print vouchers, visit www.springfieldsharefest.org, call 793-2800 or email info@springfieldsharefest.org.
