Breanne Harney is flirting with the fashion big leagues. The lifelong Springfield resident graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in June and is looking for a job, but she’s on her way to receiving a major resume boost.

Harney is one of 22 semi-finalists in the second annual FASHION|NEXT initiative, a project headed by SCAD and fashion magazine ELLE, and sponsored by Maybeline New York. ELLE editors chose Harney as one of the semifinalists and now her work will be assessed by well-known designers and fashion business leaders including the Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman fashion directors and the SAKS chief creative officer.

As part of the competition, Harney’s work will be shown at the Lincoln Center’s Koch Theater during New York Fashion Week. Top FASHION|NEXT designers will be selected as recipients of the ELLE Design Award, a $25,000 grant, and the ELLE People’s Choice Award, which comes with a $10,000 grant. Voting for the people’s choice award takes place at ELLE.com starting Sept. 9.

About her work, Harney says: “I strive to integrate my passion for history with my immense love for fashion in a way that will not cause the clothes to look aged or unwearable. I dream of a woman who appreciates the luxuries of the past but still looks toward the future.”
