LEARN HOW COPS WORK

Freeze! You have the right to remain silent. We got here as quickly as we could, ma’am.

Learn all of these police catchphrases and more at the Springfield Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy that starts Oct. 4.

“The citizens get a better idea of how we do things,” says Deputy Chief Cliff Buscher. “They understand why it takes as long as it does – it’s not like it’s on TV where everything gets done in a half hour.”

The course lasts 10 weeks, with three-hour sessions beginning at 6 p.m. each Tuesday through Dec. 20. Enrollees must pass background checks, with applications available on the city’s website at http://www.springfield.il.us.

Besides hearing presentations on the department’s drug unit, vice squad and street crimes team, enrollees will ride along with officers, fire service weapons at a range and watch how a police dog does its business.

“They get to see exactly what happens with our tactical operations, our investigations unit,” Buscher said.
