Ukulele master

art9264

Here’s a guy who plays ukulele like no one else. Witness Jake Shimabukuro’s amazing skill at the University of Illinois Springfield Studio Theater on Nov. 8. All Music Guide compares Shimabukuro aptly to other masters-of-their-instruments – Jimi Hendrix on guitar and Miles Davis on trumpet. The Hawaiian musician’s dynamics and rhythms translate into tunes that you never thought you could hear on a small instrument and sound so great. Bohemian Rhapsody is one such song. Another is Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on Shimabukuro’s latest album, Peace Love Ukulele. The rendition is moving and majestic, making the ukulele sound like a cross between a harp and classical guitar. A few awesome performances to check out online are on Rolling Stone under “Videos” then “RS Live Exclusive Performances;” Jimmy Kimmel Live at jakeshimabukuro.com; and While My Guitar Gently Weeps on YouTube. Jake was much younger looking on the YouTube video that helped catapult his career to the heights it is at now.
