The Springfield Green Business Network, formed a year ago, has developed a “green” certification program that allows businesses to track their progress toward becoming more environmentally friendly. If businesses reach certain benchmarks, they are rewarded with the right to use one of four progressively greener SGBN certification seals.

“There are a lot of businesses out in the community right now that are doing a lot of great things in terms of sustainability, but maybe people don’t know about it,” says Julie Bates, green center manager at Lincoln Land Community College and the coordinator for SGBN’s certification program. “We wanted to develop a way for the community to start to recognize those businesses that really are doing green things.”

In order to become SGBN certified, businesses must be members of the network and log through an interactive online program what steps they’re taking to be more environmentally friendly. For each initiative a business accomplishes – from using recycled paper supplies to upgrading plumbing systems – it earns a designated number of points that help it earn one of the four certification seals designating its level of commitment to becoming more sustainable.

The program, expected to go online in early November, is powered by the nationally recognized Green Business Bureau but includes initiatives developed locally. For more information about the Springfield Green Business Network or any of its programs, visit gbns.org.
