Guitar Town

The first Guitar Town event held in 2008 featured 13 of central Illinois’ favorite guitar players playing, songs they liked for fellow guitarists. With a backline of Mark LeVault on bass and Bob Young on drums with Ric “Skippy” Major running sound, 2012 continues the tradition. “Mayor” Mark Estill came up with the idea after years of “playing out all the time and never seeing other guitarists” and instigated the show to allow gigging players the opportunity to visit and jam together. His vision spawned others to begin events celebrating other instruments, like Drumfest and Bassberg, but this is the original, invitation-only, with the public invited, guitar-slinging show. Previous performers include Rick Gasparin, Hank Helton, Jeff Helton, Michael Taylor, Chas Blythe, John Blythe, Hy Bunn, Jaigh Lowder, Mike Smarjesse, Allan Harris, Gwen Harris, Bill “Machine Gun” Evans, Roy Mathy, Gary Becker, Sam Crain, Frank Huston, Joe Cooke, Andon Davis, Mike Webb, Josh Hutchison, Dave Lumsden, Tim Wallis. 2012 guitarists include returning players, plus Tom Woolsey, Owen Irwin and others.
