IRISH DANCE JUDGE

Springfield’s Sharon Stidham, owner and director of the Achill Academy of Irish Dance in Springfield, recently returned from judging the World Irish Dance Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Stidham, chairperson and co-founder of the North American Irish Dance Federation, traveled to Germany after being selected as one of seven judges for the competitions, which were held April 6 through 9.

The competition featured 400 dancers from 26 countries competing in solo dances, traditional group dances called ceilis, and in contemporary group figure and show dances.

“I am incredibly honored to have been selected as a member of this judging panel,” Stidham said. “My fellow adjudicators have decades of study and education in Irish dance, as I do, but more importantly, we all love this cultural tradition and wish to see it continue to grow and develop worldwide.”  

The Achill Academy of Irish Dance is located at 1275 Wabash Ave., and was founded in 2007. The academy offers instructions in traditional and contemporary Irish dance and Sean Nós (Old Style) Irish dance. For more information, visit www.achillacademy.com
