Poets and painters gone wild

May 11-12, 2013 turned out to be a gorgeous weekend! It did not rain the Saturday before Mother's Day as weather forecasters had predicted. Dr. Dolittle Day at Henson Robinson Zoo was sunny and warm (with just the right touch of wind, notice the flag above) -- a perfect day for folks in central Illinois to be treated to a free day of wildlife at the zoo. Thanks, zoo!

This little guy (above, left) in blue and green was blocking my path to the stage area were Springfield Poets and Writers and Prairie Art Alliance members were set to read their poems and unveil their art, respectively. The peacock was in grand attire so I didn't mind dallying and enjoying his colorful show. Plus on down the path, I was able to sit by this lady in blue hat and sunglasses (middle above). Her name is Teri Zucksworth and she's a PAA member artist. Her awesome oil painting is red ruffed lemur (above, right).

Poet and newly appointed president of Springfield Poets and Writers, Hugh Moore was the emcee for the event. Nine SPW poets read their original poems inspired by one of the zoo's animals. Six artists from PAA honed their skills on one animal, also. The painting in the photo above is by local beloved artist Felicia Olin, titled, Lemur's Morning Coffee. Felicia was unable to attend, but the gal you see by the easel is Kim Alexander of the zoo. Special thanks to her and Hugh Moore for coordinating the event.

Siobhan M. Johnson (above left in blue) read her poem about the African spurred tortoise that she titled At Her Own Pace. If you were out there in the audience, I read The Red Wolf Sings the Moon into Twilight with accompanying drum. Artist Sheri Ramsay was ready for the sun and all smiles. She unveiled her pastel (above, right) Beau & Soleil. All these works and more will be on display for you to read and view at Prairie Art Alliance Gallery II May 18-June 27. And ... we urge you to go wild with us -- and attend a reception June 7, 5-8 p.m. where you can meet the poets and artists. Go even more wild and take home a piece of art.
